Americans Like Classical Music But Don't Go to Concerts, Study Says

andante - 21 April 2002

A new study shows that a majority of American adults are interested in classical music, with nearly a third listening regularly, although only five percent of them regularly attend their local orchestras.

More than 13,500 adults were surveyed by the company Audience Insight on behalf of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The results of the study were announced on 19 April at a retreat for the Knight Foundation's Magic of Music Symphony Orchestra Initiative in Miami.

The study found that 18 percent of adults listen to classical music on the radio several times a week and 14 percent regularly listen to recordings. It also found that, contrary to the hopes of many orchestras, potential concertgoers prefer buying single tickets to subscriptions.
