Canadian tenor Ben Heppner has canceled his 7 May recital at Madrid's Teatro
Real due to health reasons, the Madrid newspaper El País reports. The
newspaper did not give specific details about Heppner's condition.
In January, Heppner canceled the remainder of a North American tour because of what his agent described as laryngitis. Heppner's problems became apparent during a recital in Toronto, when his voice weakened and he was unable to complete the performance. He later bowed out of an appearance with the Royal Opera in London.
Heppner is the fourth singer to cancel a Teatro Real recital this season due to ill health, El País says. The soprano Julia Varady canceled in December followed by mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade in February and soprano Natalie Dessay in April.
