Carlos Kalmar will succeed James DePreist next year as music director of the
Oregon Symphony Orchestra, The Oregonian of Portland reports.
Musicians in orchestra voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to accept Kalmar, who is principal conductor of Vienna's third-ranking orchestra, the Tonkunstlerorchester. The Uraguay-born Kalmar, 44, was chosen after a three-year search. He led the orchestra twice this past season and he made a strong impression on both the musicians and administrators, the newspaper says.
Details of Kalmar's contract have not been worked out, but his term will last three or four years. Kalmar is scheduled to lead his first concerts as music director designate 79 December. He will take over the orchestra in 2003, when DePreist becomes laureate conductor.
Kalmar made his U.S. debut with the Cincinnati Symphony in 1990 and he still conducts the orchestra regularly. Since 2000 he has presided over Chicago's Grant Park Festival. He began his musical career as a violinist but took up conducting at 21, the newspaper says.
