Composer Grant Beglarian, who helped to create the Arnold Schoenberg
Institute at the University of Southern California (USC), died on 5 July,
The Los Angeles Times reports. He was 74.
Beglarian wrote music for bands, choruses and chamber groups. According to the Times, he was best known for his Of Fables, Foibles, and Fancies for Cellist and Actor.
From 196982, Beglarian was the dean of performing arts at USC. In 1973, the family of Arnold Schoenberg, who spent his last years in Los Angeles, donated a collection of the composer's manuscripts and memorabilia to the university, which Beglarian turned into the Arnold Schoenberg Institute. In 1998, after a dispute between USC and the composer's family, the collection was moved to Austria.
He is survived by his wife and two children; his daughter, Eve Beglarian, is a New York-based composer.
