Edward N. Doe, a bass-baritone who sang in opera companies around the United States, died Friday in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, the Jacksonville Times-Union reports. He was 76.
Doe, who studied at the University of Miami, made his debut in 1950 with the Cincinnati Summer Opera and eventually sang more than 120 roles with the Philadelphia Grand Opera, the Opera Guild of Miami and other companies. He spent two seasons with San Francisco Opera, and appeared with several Jacksonville groups. In 1965, he appeared in Luciano Pavarotti's first American production, a staging of Lucia di Lammermoor in Miami.
For years, Doe was the bass section leader at St. John's Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. Ron Smith, the pastor of the church, told the Times-Union that he was a generous performer despite his professional pedigree. "While he had a prima donna voice," Smith said, "he never acted like one."
