Sydney Symphony Orchestra Managing Director to Step Aside After 17 Years

ABC News Online [Australia] / andante - 20 January 2003

Mary Vallentine, the longtime managing director of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, is stepping down, the Australian Broadcasting Company reports.

Vallentine joined the orchestra in 1986 and managed the ABC-controlled enterprise's successful transition to an independent organization. She has also been credited with boosting the orchestra's artistic reputation, ABC says.

Vallentine told ABC that she is looking forward to a change and believes the orchestra will continue to be successful. "It's going to be a fascinating and interesting time as I see what the next phase of life has to offer and what I have to offer it," she said.
