Young Pianist Paul Lewis is Surprise Winner of South Bank Award

The Guardian [London] / andante - 23 January 2003

Paul Lewis, a 29-year-old pianist, won the classical category of the annual arts awards presented by the British television program "The South Bank Show" on Tuesday, the Guardian of London reports.

The young musician, who won for a series of Schubert sonata performances at London's Wigmore Hall, beat out such established musicians as conductor Colin Davis and composer and conductor Oliver Knussen.

Lewis said that he was "shocked" to have won, saying that he was "amazed I got the opportunity to do [the concerts] in the first place."
