Violinist and conductor Itzhak Perlman will miss upcoming concerts with the New York Philharmonic and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) because he requires surgery to repair a shoulder injury.
According to statements from both orchestras, Perlman is suffering from a torn rotator cuff and will undergo surgery in early February. He had been scheduled to conduct the SLSO, of which he is artistic advisor, on 26 February and to play the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Philharmonic on 1215 March.
Pinchas Zukerman will replace Perlman on the Philharmonic schedule, playing Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1; the SLSO concert will be rescheduled. Perlman is expected to recover within several weeks and to appear with the Detroit Symphony, where he is principal guest conductor, on 1012 April and in St. Louis on 26 April.
"I had looked forward to being in St. Louis next month and conducting this great orchestra again," Perlman said in the SLSO's statement. "However, the torn rotator-cuff is painful and surgery is necessary for me to get better quickly."
