Disabled Musicians Honored in Taipei

The Taipei Times / andante - 26 August 2003

Taiwan's Nationwide Music Competition for the Disabled came to a close in Taipei on Sunday, the Taipei Times reports.

The disabilities of the competitors ranged from blindness and deafness to cerebral palsy and autism. Among the winners was 18-year-old flutist Shih Ying-yen, who is nearly deaf but nonetheless plays the piano and the flute and plans to take up singing.

"What I saw on stage today was more than just music. It was determination without complaint," said Wu Po-hsiung of the Po Chung Foundation, one of the event's sponsors.
