Composer Joaquim Homs, one of the leading Catalan composers of the 20th century, died on Tuesday at his home in Barcelona, Europa Press reports. He was 97.
Homs trained as an engineer as well as a cellist, and was an active engineer until 1971. Initially self-taught as a composer, he became a disciple of Roberto Gerhard in the 1930s. In 1954, he adopted the 12-tone method of Arnold Schoenberg, a teacher of Gerhard.
"Today is a sad day," said Catalan culture minister Jordi Vilajoana. "In just a short time we have lost two great creators: Xavier Montsalvatge [who died last year] and Homs. We have lost Homs' body and soul, but we have his work."
