il giardino armonico
giovanni antonini
Everyone remembers the enormous impact, ten years ago, of the recording
of The Four Seasons by Il Giardino
Armonico which swept away generations of earlier interpretations virtually at a
stroke, and sold several hundred thousands copies around the world.
Today, Il Giardino
Armonico
joins naïve: 2005 marks the return of the enfants terribles of Baroque in a devilishly exciting,
long-nurtured programme devoted to the eighteenth century, which - not by chance - is entitled La
casa del Diavolo
.
And as with every one of their recordings, we are invited to
a new riot of colours, a whirlwind of crescendos, a banquet of contrasting
rhythms... Here is another of those succulent dishes of which only Il Giardino
Armonico
knows the recipe.
Just listen, for example, to those incisive trumpets that punctuate the Gluck, those swirling strings in the Dance of the
Furies. Listen to the violin of Enrico Onofri which suddenly becomes a human voice in Il Pianto d'Arianna to amazingly
pathetic effect; or listen to those incomparable rhythmic convulsions in Boccherini's La
casa del Diavolo .
