Tracce, sec. XIV & XV Patrizia Bovi, Gilberte Casabianca
In 1996, Patrizia Bovi, an Italian specialist in the music of her country in the Middle Ages and creator of the Micrologus ensemble, met Gilberte Casabianca, a Corsican singer who was working on that same medieval repertory, but also in the field of contemporary music, and above all had sung the traditional music of her native island since childhood. From the chemistry between these two women brought up on Mediterranean culture an audacious project was born : Tracce. A search for the traces of the timeless music of the folk tradition in the beautiful and little-known repertory of so-called "art music" from the 14th and 15th centuries. Hence the vocal timbres so characteristic of the folk music of Corsica, Tuscany, Umbria - those voices that seem to resound in the medieval chronicles and in the celebrated frescoes of the Basilica of St Francis in Patrizia Bovi's home town of Assisi - reveal as never before siciliane, laude for two voices, lovers' complaints and devotional chants. A traditional Stabat Mater from Corsica goes side by side with a truculent harvest song. With this magnificent bridge thrown between two musical traditions whose common features now become obvious, the voice of the Mediterranean at least reasserts itself in all its splendour.
