Who was 'Susanna dell'oboe'? A German visitor to Venice in 1726 tells us of this young resident at the Ospedale della Pietà, whom he heard playing sublimely - but without seeing her, for the female musicians of the Pietà performed behind a screen, making them all the more fascinating to musicloving tourists. It was doubtless for this enigmatic Susanna, of whom we know nothing else, that Vivaldi composed the superb virtuoso Concerto RV 454, as well as the Concerto for oboe and violin RV 548 in which her playful sparring partner was probably Anna Maria, the Prete rosso's bestknown pupil. If the 'Concerto con due Aubois' RV 534, written before 1720, was also certainly intended for the figlie of the Pietà, the other works assembled by Zefiro in this intriguing survey of Vivaldi's output of wind instruments show both the composer's spreading European fame. and the difficulty of definitely identifying the recipients of all his concertos! Thus the three concertos for multiple soloists are thought to have been composed for the renowned Dresden court orchestra (RV 566) or for religious ceremonies at Rome (RV 559 and 560, the earliest known use of clarinets in concertante style). But of the performer of the Bassoon Concerto RV 497, we know absolutely nothing - yet Vivaldi wrote around thirty concertos for the instrument in his last years. Luckily we are on surer ground with the musicians selected for the present CD: the Zefiro ensemble has been responsible for some of the most exciting Vivaldi albums of the past few years.
