Introduction to Ircam
Ircam's objectives
Ircam welcomes and encourages a rich interaction between musical creation and research, remaining faithful to its original purpose while responding to the urgency of change.

Multiform research
Mutually enriching for both researchers and composers, research is structured around concerted projects, harmonising the most recent technology with the demands and logic of the field of music. It uses the best in scientific know-how and benefits from numerous external partnerships, as well as from effective applications of its results.

A creative space in real time
Open to the international music community, the Institute welcomes young talent and established composers each year. It offers composers a framework for efficient technical production. The multi-disciplinary environment of the Centre Georges-Pompidou also enhances the possibility for collaborative works (dance, film, video, sound installations). The dissemination of works is also aided by a special relationship with the Ensemble Intercontemporain and other musical institutions (festivals, operas, theatres and, of course, record companies).

An important center of education
Upstream and downstream of research and artistic creation, Ircam provides training programs and other forms of aid. Composers must be able to learn how to handle modern technology. Students must have access to the approaches that guide research and creativity in the world of contemporary music. And lastly, the general public needs signposts to help find its way in a constantly developing musical adventure.

Active mediation
Ircam is developing its publishing activities in order to contribute to the documentation of today's music, and also to be able to assess critically the technological and artistic issues that are constantly emerging. At the same time, the new multimedia library is being equipped with the latest in computer technology in order to access a wide variety of multimedia products. And finally, by increasing the number of days it is open to the public and through the numerous and varied events it organises in collaboration with the other parts of the Centre Georges-Pompidou, Ircam is in the public eye more than ever.

IRCAM and andante

IRCAM and andante are working on a number of initiatives, including the preparation of a comprehensive history of IRCAM with an emphasis on the institution's chronological record and an analysis of its role and influence in the world of contemporary music.  IRCAM and andante will also explore the possibilities of publishing the IRCAM archives. Finally, both institutions will explore ways to spread the use of tools developed by IRCAM for composers and musicians generally.
